BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAMES:  By Brian Zelley

It has taken many decades to build-up the history of amateur boxing in
British Columbia from Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Prince Rupert,
Prince George and to the likes of Kelowna and Cranbrook, but as of June 2010
there had been no serious attempts to recognize the sport, the boxers, coaches
and officials.

BOXING BC does have annuals awards but they are for those actively involved,
and any past alumni of boxing in British Columbia have been assigned a place
in the trash heap of sports history.  Now that is a shame as the sport no matter
the decade was built or saved by the activity and dedication of members of the past.

A NEW BEGINNING TO REMEMBER AND RECOGNIZE those of the past began in July
when ex-members of boxing chose to recognize past members with the
BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME.  After two months in a
selection and elimination process, 15 stand on the "threshold of a dream"  yo recognize them as the core group.

BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME:  By Brian W. Zelley

As of August 1, 2010, there are no inductees into the BC AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME.

However, by the end of 2010 there will be some past members of amateur boxing recognized by past and present members of BC amateur boxing in the first every selection.

The process started in July with 50 potential boxers and builders, but by July 31 st. that list has ben reducede to 24 in Round 1 of the selection and elimination process.

1974 - BOXING RENEWAL VICTORIA, BC

This photo was taken by Jim Ryan for The Victorian
and a like photo was published on November 22, 1974
and was used to highlight the revival of boing in Victoria, BC
- Ian Weir, Mike Cairdk, Brian Zelley and missing from the photo
but in the article was "Dynamite" Dan Wright.

T
he 1974 was significant as it marked the early stages of a significant revival in the whole of Vancouver Island from Gold River to Victoria and would be highlighted by a series of tournaments in the Eighties
For Zelley and Wright it would be another important step in rebuilding boxing ion Vancouver Island
which began when we formed the Nanaimo Boxing Club in 1971.  and the first significant event for Nanaimo was boxer JACK SNAITH winning a Canadian Boxing Championship in 1973.  For part of 1973
Dan would work with the North West Eagle Boxing Club in North Vancouver and Brian was focusing on Nanaimo and Victoria. Prior to 1974, there was some activity in Victoria but it was limited with no great profile, but that would all change with the arrival of Weir, Zelley and Wright.

One of the important tasks in 1974 for those of that were coaching was to prepare boxer WAYNE CROWE
for the Canaian National tournament. Then came preparing boxers for various club shows or
tournaments.  Two of the coaches were Mike Caird and Gordie McGaw and I helped as well.
Another important job was to build-up the public awareness and public relations in the commiunity
including connecting with the news media.  Like the Nanaimo Times in Nanaimo,, I felt the
paper called The Victorian would be a good place to start feeding information and stories, but it
wasn't until November that we got the big story that included staff writer PATTY PITTS and top
rated photographer JIM RYAN for the photo ops.  The story hit the streets and homes on
November 22, 1974 and was titled "BOXING BACK FROM THE ROPES".

At the time, we were operating as Victoria Boxing Club out of the Victoria Boy's Club on
Yates Street.  Names mentioned included 1967 Canadian Boxing Champion BILLY TAYLOR
to emphasize how boxing was in Victoria in the Sixties.  Then spoke about Mike Caird,
Dan Wright and Ian Weir.  At the time there were about 15 trainees, And there was
a pre-publicity bit about the coming BC Winter Festival of Sports Event  boxing competition
to take place in Nanaimo.    Also, the story of Zelley and Wright reviving boxing in Nanaimo in 1971
and JACK SNAITH winning a Canadian title in 1973 were more important publicity scoring points.

Well it didn't take long for  members of the London Boxing & Athletic Club to approach us
to reactivate the boxing program.  Of course, as the club had not sponsored boxing for a few
years despite starting as a boxing club in the early Sixties, so part of the decision was political
and part was financial.  With the boxing program it was a double win for the club with no
downside as sponsoring junior boxers was political in a way because it would help satisfy
Government in the bingo games operated by the club, and the boxing could stage boxing cards
at the club house on Quadra Street  with limited overhead resulting in a positive cash flow.

The big prize however came in June of 1976, when Victoria was one of two locations
in British Columbia that would host an International tournament between an English boxing team
and the best junior boxers of British Columbia including the likes of DALE WALTERS, BARRY BLATTER,
EDDIE MCCAFFREY, JOHN HERMAN  and others.  Also Victoria senior boxers Ian Weir and Wayne
Crowe engaged in a seniors bout.  The icing on the cake was Mike Caird, Howard Curling and Brian Zelley received Certificates of Outstanding Merit  from the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Association.
Following that event there was no looking back for amateur boxing for the next ten years, but there still
needed to be a move to get all Vancouver Island clubs working on a regular basis to promote the
sport throughout the Island.
